about HBI

The mission of Hepatitis B Initiative-Boston is to mobilize students to help communities to prevent hepatitis B and its consequences among at-risk groups, particularly Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by:

  • developing culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach materials on hepatitis B
  • collaborating with existing community resources to launch educational campaigns
  • providing free screenings and vaccinations to all individuals

The mission of Hepatitis B Initiative-DC Affiliate is to mobilize faith-based communities to prevent hepatitis B and its consequences among at risk groups, particularly Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders by:

  • developing culturally and linguistically appropriate outreach materials on hepatitis B
  • collaborating with existing community resources to launch educational campaigns and set up screening and vaccination events

HBI is unique in that it is the only AAPI hepatitis B organization that: 1) provides free screenings and vaccinations 2) conducts participatory learning development. HBI believes in the importance of not only screening for hepatitis B carrier status but also providing vaccinations for those who are not carriers in order to protect them and their families for life. HBI attempts to find resources that are not readily accessible or available to the community. Equally important, HBI is also interested in empowering a community to conduct their own hepatitis B outreach program. The community is the expert in knowing what the best methods of outreaching to their peers are. In the process of developing their own outreach strategies and materials, they learn about hepatitis B and become hepatitis B advocates in their community. The hepatitis B outreach program they create is stronger and more sustainable since it is embedded into their way of life.
